Adoption

When a family decides to make an addition by way of adoption, the adoption attorneys at Dietz & Overmann, PLLC, can assist couples and individuals adopting a child.

The DO Family Law adoption lawyers will first educate the prospective adoptive parent or parents on the types of adoptions.

The different options are:

  • Step-parent adoption is when a spouse of one of the child’s parents wishes to adopt the minor child.
  • Foreign adoption or international adoption is when an individual or couple adopts a child from outside of the United States of America.
  • Private adoption is when an individual or couple adopts a child where the adoptive parent has come to an agreement with the biological parents without the aid of an agency. This can be someone introduced to the adoptive parent through family, friends or church.
  • Agency adoption is when a prospective adoptive parent or parents utilizes an agency to facilitate the placement of the child in their home.
  • Foster adoption is an adoption where the foster parents adopt a child that is in the care, custody and control of the Cabinet of Health and Family Services of the State of Kentucky because the biological parents’ rights have been terminated.

After educating the prospective adoptive parents on the types of adoption, the Dietz & Overmann, PLLC, adoption lawyers will explain the process to the clients and answer and questions they may have.

In some adoptions, it is necessary to petition the court to terminate the parental rights prior to filing for adoption. The DO Family Law attorneys are familiar with this process and can assist clients in this area as well. We can also assist parents who believe that their rights are wrongfully being terminated.
